Dr Silverman Meets Pa!

After my yearly vacation I usually tell you my lessons learned from traveling the world. This year I met a very special individual on the island of Raratonga in the South Pacific. Pa the gentle soul in the photo is the islands herbal healer/medicine man. I had read about him before I met him and his legend precedes this humble loving soul. I had the wonderful opportunity to take an herbal medicine hike through the hills of the Island with him. Minute by minute, he would pull up leafy herbs and instruct me on what each could do. His favorite herb is Noni. This fruit he claims helps pain, repels mosquitoes, can help cancer, and grow hair. Noni is available here in the US, but if you try it, make sure you get pure Noni, not watered down extract.  He also  taught me that Noni worsens gout. It raises uric acid and hence flares the gout. He and I conversed and he was impressed when he pulled up fresh Turmeric I explained to him how it is similar to Celebrex.

Other herbs he mentioned: Raro helps cervical cancer, Mile a minute helps Diabetes, Taro is full of minerals, and Sea Cucumber has multiple benefits. Pa also told me many stories about his life that were quite extraordinary. His brother died of Dengue Fever and he then was inspired by his gift and found an herbal cure for it. At one point he swam across from Tahiti to Moorea and fended off  sharks with a dolphin guide. He helped the Dalai Lama find an ancient energy focus on the Island and he also claims to help calm down a volcano eruption in Hawaii. Some of his stories at times were too unbelievable, but everyone on the island knows him and loves him. I had such a wonderful time meeting this gentle soul, that if we have the time I would love to give you more details if you are interested.  He invited me to study with him for 3 months, but for now I am glad to be home and back to work in my hut across from Tahiti to Moorea and fended off  sharks with a dolphin guide. RIBOSE for FMS

A recent article on medscape.com showed how ribose a simple sugar helped a surgeon suffering with FMS overcome her pain and fatigue. Similar to what Malic Acid and Magnesium do it works in the energy cycles of the body. While we do not have the supplement in our office, I am sure if you search around it may be available from

Bioenergy.com. I hate to recommend something on the experience of one study about one person, yet since it is a simple sugar the risk seems minimal. The trade name is CORvalen and it has also been used in heart disease reguarding fatigue issues.
